Disease Resistance in Africanized Honey Bees

چکیده

One of the consequences of the expansion is the health conditions of the bees in the countries where they are found today. It is known that the honey bees are susceptible to several diseases and bee pests such as EFB, AFB, Nosema, Amoeba, Sacbrood, Chalkbrood, Acarine, Varroosis, Viruses etc. The two most important diseases of honey bees are Varroosis and American Foulbrood (AFB) (DE JONG, 1994). However, evidences of resistance of certain races of honey bees exist against certain diseases and parasites, deserving special note the honey bees Apis cerana in Asia (PENG et al., 1987; RATH & DRESCHER, 1999) and AHB in Brazil (MESSAGE and GONÇALVES, 1977).

Africanized bees extend their distribution in California

Africanized honey bees (Apis mellifera) arrived in the western hemisphere in the 1950s and quickly spread north reaching California in the 1990s. These bees are highly defensive and somewhat more difficult to manage for commercial purposes than the European honey bees traditionally kept. The arrival of these bees and their potentially replacing European bees over much of the state is thus of gr...

Male reproductive parasitism: a factor in the africanization of European honey-bee populations.

Africanized drone honey bees (Apis mellifera) migrate into European honey-bee colonies in large numbers, but Africanized colonies only rarely host drones from other colonies. This migration leads to a strong mating advantage for Africanized bees since it both inhibits European drone production and enhances Africanized drone production.

Range and Frequency of Africanized Honey Bees in California (USA)

Africanized honey bees entered California in 1994 but few accounts of their northward expansion or their frequency relative to European honey bees have been published. We used mitochondrial markers and morphometric analyses to determine the prevalence of Africanized honeybees in San Diego County and their current northward progress in California west of the Sierra Nevada crest. The northernmost...

ECOLOGICAL IMPACT ON NATIVE BEES BY THE INVASIVE AFRICANIZED HONEY BEE Abejas cleptoparasitas, con énfasis en las abejas hospederas colectoras de aceites (Hymenoptera: Apoidea)

Very little effort has been made to investigate bee population dynamics among intact wilderness areas. The presence of newly-arrived feral Africanized honey bee (AHB), Apis mellifera (Apidae), populations was studied for 10-17 years in areas previously with few or no escaped European apiary honey bees. Here I describe and interpret the major results from studies in three neotropical forests: Fr...

Rapid morphological changes in populations of hybrids between Africanized and European honey bees.

African honey bees, introduced to Brazil in 1956, rapidly dominated the previously introduced European subspecies. To better understand how hybridization between these different types of bees proceeded, we made geometric morphometric analyses of the wing venation patterns of specimens resulting from crosses made between Africanized honey bees (predominantly Apis mellifera scutellata) and I...
